First Morning Ferries in 3 Days Because of Snow and Ice Easter Sunday, April 8, 2007
Not many people got to Middle Bass Island for the Easter weekend this year. Friday and Saturday no morning ferries ran at all because the combination of wind and freezing temperatures made it too dangerous. Friday morning, the Catawba dock was covered with thick sheet ice and icicles. People waiting for the early 9:15AM boat to Middle Bass had to wait until 2:15PM. Saturday was more or less the same, with low temperatures and intermittent light snow continuing.
Sunday morning the temperatures were still cold but the wind and water were much quieter, so the ferries started on time. The first three pictures below show the 11AM boat arriving at Middle Bass on Easter Sunday with 2 cars on board. This was the first Easter with snow in many years.
The last picture was taken on Monday, April 8 from the 8:15AM ferry on the way back to Catawba. It shows the icing on the west shore of Put-in-Bay.
