Rattlesnake Island Local Post Celebrates 40th Anniversary

On November 17, 2006, Rattlesnake Island will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the issue of its first local post stamps.  The 2006 stamps feature An Island Home 25, Griffing Air Service delivers the mail to the RI PMG 50, and a 1928 Model A Ford with the island postmaster - $1.00.  In addition, a 40th Anniversary stamp will feature The 1928 Ford Trimotor delivering the mail - $2.00.  The 2006 stamps feature photographs taken on the island while the 40th Anniversary stamp features a still from a Huntley-Brinkley TV report on the island and its battle with the POD over its local post stamps.  The trimotor is delivering the first local post stamped mail to Charles Busch, the island caretaker.

This year being the 40th anniversary of the issuance of the first stamps, a special pictorial cancel will be utilized to cancel the USPS stamp on all FDCs.  The regular diamond cancel will cancel the local post stamps.

As like last year, send your first day cover requests to:

Rattlesnake Island Local Post

c/o Griffing Air Service

Sandusky Airport

Sandusky, OH  44870

Make sure to leave the bottom left corner blank for the RILP stamps and frank the upper right corner with the appropriate US first class postage.  If you do not want your covers to go into the mailstream, please include a stamped SASE with your order.  Also, make sure your covers arrive before the issue date of 11/17/06.  Please make checks payable to Rattlesnake Island Local Post.  For those wishing to use a credit card, the toll free number is 1-877-RILPOST (745-7678).  Any questions concerning the stamps should be sent to Bob Fritz at rikid@cox.net or (623) 972-0372.

Pictures of the stamps and postmark are below.
